The Best Firewood for Cold Ohio Months, Plus Cords Explained: Full Cord, Face Cord and 1/6 Cord
Which firewood gives you the best heat on a cold Ohio night, and how much wood is a cord, a face cord or a 1/6 cord? Here's a plain-English guide, with our seasoned firewood prices.
When the temperature drops and the wind picks up, not all firewood is created equal. Some wood lights in seconds and is gone in an hour, while other wood burns slow and steady well into the night. And when you go to buy firewood, terms like "cord," "face cord" and "rick" can make it hard to know what you're actually paying for. Our family at Mike Jones & Sons Tree Service has been working with wood for over four decades, so let's clear it all up.

What Makes Good Winter Firewood
Two things matter most: density and dryness.
Dense hardwoods pack more fuel into every piece, so they burn longer and give off more steady heat. But even the best wood won't perform if it's wet. Seasoned firewood, dried to below about 20 percent moisture, is what lets any species burn at its best.
Popular Hardwoods for Cold Ohio Nights
These are some of the hardwoods people in Ohio commonly reach for in winter:
- Oak: A classic. Burns long and hot and leaves good coals for overnight fires. It does take a long time to season, so make sure it's truly dry.
- Hickory: Very dense with strong heat output. A favorite for serious cold.
- Sugar (hard) maple: Burns hot and clean, with good coals.
- Ash: Splits easily, seasons relatively quickly and burns well.
- Cherry: Medium heat, easy to light, and has a pleasant smell many people love in the living room.
- Beech: Dense and long-burning once seasoned.
Where Softwoods Fit In
Softwoods like pine, spruce and fir aren't "bad" firewood. They light fast and burn hot but quick, which makes them great kindling and handy for getting a fire started. Many folks use a little softwood or small split pieces to get going, then add hardwood to keep the fire burning. Whatever you burn, never burn painted, stained or pressure-treated lumber.

Cords Explained
Firewood is sold by volume, and the official unit is the cord. Here's what each term means:
Full Cord
A full cord is a neatly stacked pile measuring 4 feet high, 4 feet deep and 8 feet long, which equals 128 cubic feet. That volume includes the small air spaces between pieces, which is normal for stacked wood.
Face Cord (1/3 Cord)
A face cord is one row that's 4 feet high and 8 feet long, but only as deep as the pieces are long. With typical firewood lengths, that works out to about a third of a full cord. At Mike Jones & Sons, our face cord is 1/3 cord, or 42.66 cubic feet. You might also hear it called a "rick," but that word isn't used the same way everywhere, so always ask for the actual measurements.
1/6 Cord
Our 1/6 cord is 21.33 cubic feet, half of a face cord. It's a good size for occasional fires, holiday gatherings or a few fire pit nights.
How Much Should You Order?
- Occasional fires: 1/6 cord
- Regular evening fires: a face cord
- Heating with a wood stove or burning most nights: a full cord or more
