Firewood Season Tips: How Akron Homeowners Can Get Ready for Fall and Winter Fires
Fire season is here in Northeast Ohio. Here's a simple checklist for getting your fireplace, fire pit and firewood supply ready before the first cold snap, plus how to get seasoned firewood delivered in Akron and Cleveland.
The leaves are coming down, the nights are getting cooler, and it's that time of year again: firewood season. If you're in Akron, Cleveland or anywhere in Northeast Ohio, now is the best time to get your fireplace, wood stove and fire pit ready, before the first real cold snap sends everyone looking for firewood at the same time. Here at Mike Jones & Sons Tree Service, LLC, our family has been working with trees and wood for over four decades, and we've put together a simple checklist to help you start the season off right.
Want to skip the hunt this year? We deliver and stack seasoned firewood across the Akron-Cleveland area. Order Seasoned Firewood - Akron-Cleveland | Call or Text (234) 300-2311
1. Order Your Firewood Early
The biggest mistake we see every year is waiting until the first freezing weekend. When temperatures drop, demand for firewood in Akron and Cleveland jumps quickly. Ordering in early fall means you can choose your delivery day, get the amount you actually want, and have it stacked and ready before you need it.
It also gives you time to check your wood. Even wood sold as seasoned is happiest sitting in a good stack with airflow for a few weeks before you start burning it.
2. Figure Out How Much You'll Need
How much firewood you need depends on how you use it:
- Weekend fires and holidays: A 1/6 cord is a nice amount for occasional fireplace use or backyard fire pit nights.
- Regular evening fires: A face cord (1/3 cord) usually makes more sense if you're lighting a fire several nights a week.
- Heating with a wood stove: If wood is a real part of how you heat your home, plan on a full cord or more for the season.
Not sure? Call or text us and tell us how you burn. We're happy to help you pick the right amount so you don't run out in January or end up with more wood than you have room to store.

3. Get Your Chimney and Stove Checked
Before your first fire, take a few minutes to look things over:
- Schedule a chimney inspection and cleaning. Fire safety groups recommend having chimneys and vents inspected once a year.
- Make sure the damper opens and closes smoothly.
- Check your fireplace screen or stove door gasket for gaps.
- Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and swap the batteries.
- Keep a metal bucket with a lid handy for ashes, and set it outside, away from the house and deck.
4. Burn Only Seasoned Firewood
This one matters more than anything else on the list. Seasoned firewood has been split and dried until most of its moisture is gone. It lights easier, burns hotter and makes far less smoke than green (freshly cut) wood. Wet wood wastes heat boiling off water and leaves more creosote in your chimney, which is the stuff that can lead to chimney fires.
At Mike Jones & Sons, our seasoned firewood is split, dried and guaranteed seasoned, so it's ready to burn when it shows up. If you'd rather season your own, we can also provide green wood.

5. Set Up a Good Storage Spot
Pick your firewood spot before the delivery truck shows up. A good spot is:
- Off the ground, on a rack, pallets or blocks
- A few feet away from your house, not leaning against the siding
- Covered on top, but open on the sides so air can move through
- Close enough to the door that you'll actually use it in February
Keep a small amount inside near the fireplace for the next day or two, and leave the rest outside. Bringing a big pile indoors can bring bugs in with it.

6. Don't Forget the Fire Pit
Fall is prime fire pit weather in Northeast Ohio. The same rules apply outside: use dry, seasoned firewood for an easy-lighting fire with less smoke drifting toward your neighbors. Keep the pit a safe distance from fences, low branches and structures, check your local burning rules, and always put the fire completely out before heading inside.
